Raiders Golden Idol

The idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the crowning jewels of props from movies about the golden era. Indian Jones had it in his possesion for just a few moments before being snatch away by the villainous Frenchman, Belloq. There are many copies floating on E-bay. Some are quit humorous.

What color are the Idols eyes in Raider's?

I had to check this out because a friend of mine used to work at ILM.  He was in the archive room and was looking at the idols.  He said one of them had these cheesy BLUE eyes.  It also had a mechanism to make the eyes move. So I watched my VHS tape and I just could not tell, so another friend had it on laser.  I made a copy of the scene on my digital camcorder, transferred that to my computer and took a screen grab of what you see here. It is the shot when Indy is letting the sand run through his fingers.  The color is difficult to make out due to the low fire light, but their defiantly human, not gold. One source says the eyes are brown (see photo above left). I am told that in the script it says that the eyes seem to follow Indy.  The only time they are human eyes is when it's on the alter. The rest of the time they are gold.  The Idol with human eyes was used in some of the shots to create a feeling that the idol was watching Indy.  One last point, The Lucas Film Archive book was originally in Japanese.  The reason is, it was sold as a souvenir during a Japanese tour of the archives.  The painted prop with turned down corners and no pupils shown in the book belonged to the publisher.

There are two basic versions of the idol. The one in the film (right) and another version with the corners of the mouth turned down (left). Why the two different versions is still a mystery. One theory is that at some point the original mold was breaking down and when the cast was being cleaned up for remolding, they altered the mouth. Another possible explanation is the original was created by the art department in England and the other could have been sculpted at LucasFilm for their use. It should be stated that the version with the turned down corners is not seen in the movie.

There is precedence for this. Back in 1980 when I was researching info on the lightsabres, I spoke with a ILM tech. He said the hero props were made in England and that ILM made their own sabres for their visual FX work and insert shots. That's why some of the props look bogus in the LucasFilm book.

The MK Idol

Considered by most to be the most accurate reproduction ever of the Raiders idol.

Like the screen used prop it has the currect mouth, no headband, holes for the pupils and is gold plated.

Seen clean (left) and with dulling spray applied as seen in the movie. (right)
